The Top Four Questions about Free Solar Panel Systems in Cambodia

Businesses are now using solar to reduce electricity costs in Cambodia, so we were sure to create the Solar: financing the next energy revolution panel discussion at this Thursday's Green Business Forum.

There are currently four ways to finance a solar system in Cambodia, and one of those options is to lease solar panels at zero upfront cost. We joined panel moderator Arnaud Ayral to ask the four most common questions about this.

When a company offers ‘free solar panels’, what is that?

"Usually, they are referring to solar leases. A solar company will put a solar system on your roof at no up-front cost to you. This sounds great – your business is now powered by clean energy. But keep in mind that you do not technically own the system; under solar lease agreements, ownership is retained by the solar company to whom you make monthly lease payments. In essence, you now have a small power plant on your roof and generate some of your own electricity."

Will I have to pay for the solar system?

“No, Solar companies will cover the upfront capital cost of the solar PV system and will pay for all costs associated with maintaining the system throughout the lifecycle. You make monthly lease payments which result in net savings when comparing cost per kWh with current grid prices."

Does this mean I will disconnect from the grid?

“No it doesn’t. Assuming your factory or building is connected to the grid, that will continue to be the case even after the system is installed. The solar system will generate power during day time and the grid will “top up” your requirement, while during the night and/or cloudy days then most (or all) of your supply will come from the grid. There will be no impact to your processes and there is not 'switch over' time to worry about.”

Who will look after the system after commissioning?

“The best solar companies will take over the system upon its completion. That includes remote monitoring of the performance parameters of the system, various long-term behavior analyses, and preventive maintenance tasks during the system’s lifetime. "
