Bumrungrad Health Briefing #115: How Sleep Affects Heart and Brain Health

Sleep is one of the most powerful daily habits for protecting long term health. While many people focus on food and exercise, sleep is just as important. Updated medical guidance shows that not getting enough quality sleep is linked to high blood pressure, heart disease, heart attack, stroke, and depression. Most adults need at least seven hours of sleep each night, and many experts recommend aiming for seven to nine hours for optimal health.

For the heart, poor sleep places extra stress on the cardiovascular system. Sleep also affects stress hormones such as cortisol, which may influence blood pressure and overall cardiovascular strain. In other words, sleeping too little does not only leave you tired. It can quietly increase the workload on your heart. For the brain, sleep is when essential restoration happens. Good sleep supports attention, memory, learning, emotional balance, and clear thinking. Poor sleep, on the other hand, can lead to irritability, slower thinking, reduced concentration, and lower mental performance. Consistently sleeping too little may also increase the risk of cognitive decline over time.

One of the most common causes of poor-quality sleep is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a condition in which the airway repeatedly becomes blocked during sleep, reducing airflow and disrupting normal rest. OSA may contribute to daytime fatigue and may also affect long term heart and brain health if left untreated.

Common warning signs that sleep may be harming your health include:

  • Loud snoring or gasping during sleep
  • Morning headaches
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Mood changes or irritability
  • Waking often during the night

Simple steps can help improve sleep quality:

  • Keep a regular sleep and wake schedule
  • Limit caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol late in the day
  • Make the bedroom dark, quiet, and comfortable
  • Stay physically active
  • Seek medical advice if symptoms continue
