Blood tests are widely used to screen for disease, monitor existing conditions, and evaluate overall health. Still, one abnormal number does not always mean something is wrong. Doctors interpret results alongside your age, sex, symptoms, medicines, medical history, and trends over time.
Here are some of the most common parts of a blood test:
- Complete Blood Count (CBC)
A CBC measures key blood components, including red blood cells, white blood cells, hemoglobin, hematocrit, and platelets. It can help detect anemia, infection, inflammation, and some blood disorders. White blood cells help fight infection, red blood cells carry oxygen, and platelets help blood clot.
- Blood Sugar
Tests such as fasting blood sugar help assess how your body handles glucose. High levels may suggest impaired glucose control or diabetes risk, while low levels may also need medical review. Blood sugar testing is commonly included in preventive screening.
- Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP) or Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP)
These panels measure substances such as sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate, calcium, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, and glucose. A CMP also includes proteins, enzymes, and other markers. These tests provide useful information about electrolyte balance, metabolism, kidney function, hydration, and overall physical health.
- Lipid Profile
This test checks total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglycerides to estimate cardiovascular risk. It is often part of routine health screening, especially for adults with risk factors such as obesity, high blood pressure, or a family history of heart disease.
- Liver, Kidney, Thyroid, and Uric Acid Tests
Depending on your checkup program and symptoms, doctors may also review liver enzymes, kidney markers, thyroid hormones, and uric acid to look for problems that may not cause early symptoms.
A useful rule to remember is that reference ranges are guides, not diagnoses. A slightly high or low result may be harmless in one person but important in another. That is why proper interpretation matters more than reading each number alone.
