Bumrungrad Health Briefing #117: Women’s Checkups: What’s Right for Your Age

Women’s health screening should never be one size fits all. A useful checkup is built around age, personal risk, reproductive health, and long-term conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or osteoporosis. In general, routine visits also review weight, blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, menstrual or menopausal changes, vaccinations, and any new symptoms.

In your 20s and 30s

  • Cervical cancer screening becomes important from age 21. A Pap test is generally recommended every 3 years in the 20s. From age 30 to 65, screening may be done with a Pap test every 3 years, an HPV test every 5 years, or Pap and HPV co-testing every 5 years, depending on your doctor’s advice.
  • This is also the time to discuss menstrual problems, contraception, fertility planning, sexual health, breast symptoms, thyroid symptoms, iron deficiency, and lifestyle risks such as stress, sleep, weight gain, and smoking.
  • Pelvic examination is still necessary once a year.

In your 40s

  • Breast screening becomes more important. Women at average risk generally begin screening mammograms at age 40, with repeat screening based on risk and shared decision-making.
  • From age 45, colorectal cancer screening is recommended for average-risk adults. Colonoscopy is one option, though the right test depends on risk factors and physician advice.
  • This decade is also a good time to review perimenopause symptoms, heart health, metabolic health, and weight-related risks.

In your 50s and beyond

  • Continue breast, cervical, and colorectal screening as advised.
  • Bone density testing becomes increasingly important around menopause and by age 65, or earlier if fracture risk is higher.
  • After 65, some women may be able to stop cervical cancer screening if prior results have been consistently normal and risk is low.

At Bumrungrad Health Screening Center, women can access age-appropriate preventive checkups, including gynecologic screening, mammography, pelvic ultrasound, and coordinated specialist review in one setting.
