Bumrungrad Health Briefing #126: Your Eyes at Work: Protect Vision in the Digital Age

Modern work often means long hours in front of screens. While digital devices are essential, prolonged screen use can make the eyes work harder and may lead to digital eye strain. Common symptoms include:

  • Dry, irritated, or burning eyes
  • Blurred or fluctuating vision
  • Eye fatigue or heaviness
  • Headaches
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Difficulty focusing after screen use
  • Neck, shoulder, or back discomfort
  • Digital eye strain is often linked to reduced blinking, screen glare, poor lighting, long periods of near focus, incorrect screen distance, or an uncorrected vision problem.

To protect your eyes at work:

  • Use the 20-20-20 rule
Every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This simple habit helps relax the focusing muscles of the eyes and may reduce digital eye strain during long work hours.
  • Blink more often
People tend to blink less when using computers, tablets, or phones, which can make the eyes feel dry, tired, or irritated. Try to blink intentionally, especially during focused tasks.
  • Adjust your screen position
Keep your monitor about an arm’s length away. The top of the screen should be at or slightly below eye level to support a more comfortable viewing angle.
  • Reduce glare and harsh lighting
Position your screen away from direct window glare or strong overhead light. Adjust brightness and contrast so the screen feels comfortable, not too bright or too dim.
  • Increase font size
If you are squinting, leaning forward, or getting headaches, enlarge the text instead of forcing your eyes to work harder.
  • Take short breaks
Stand, stretch, and relax your neck and shoulders. Eye comfort is closely connected to posture, desk setup, and muscle tension.
  • Manage dry eye triggers
Air-conditioning, low humidity, and long screen sessions may worsen dryness. Artificial tears may help, but persistent symptoms should be checked.
  • Limit screens before bedtime
Reducing late-night screen exposure may support better sleep and help your eyes recover after a long day.

See an eye specialist if symptoms persist, vision changes, headaches become frequent, or eye pain develops. Regular eye exams help detect problems early.
