Bumrungrad Health Briefing #136: Breast Cancer Awareness: Early Detection Saves Lives

Breast cancer usually develops before any lump or other symptom is noticeable. Regular screening can detect changes at an earlier stage, when treatment may be more effective and more options may be available. Breast awareness also matters: knowing what is normal for you can help you recognize changes that should be assessed by a doctor.

Why Early Detection Matters

Breast imaging (ultrasound and mammogram) is one of the most important tools for breast cancer screening. It uses low-dose X-rays to identify suspicious changes, including abnormalities that may be too small to feel.

Screening recommendations depend on age and individual risk. Many women should begin discussing routine mammography with their doctor around age 40. Screening may need to start earlier or include additional tests for people at higher risk because of factors such as:

  • A strong family history of breast or ovarian cancer
  • Inherited genetic changes associated with breast cancer
  • Previous radiation treatment to the chest
  • A personal history of breast cancer or certain high-risk breast conditions
  • Dense breast tissue, depending on individual risk

Know the Changes to Watch For

Early breast cancer usually does not cause symptoms, but changes that should be evaluated include:

  • A new lump or thickening in the breast or underarm
  • Changes in breast size, shape or appearance
  • Dimpling, puckering, redness or other skin changes
  • A nipple that newly turns inward
  • Unusual nipple discharge, particularly if bloody
  • Persistent breast or nipple changes that are new for you

What Happens If Something Is Found?

An abnormal mammogram does not automatically mean breast cancer. Many breast findings are benign. Depending on the result, further evaluation may include additional mammogram views, breast ultrasound or MRI. If an area remains suspicious, a biopsy may be performed to obtain a tissue sample for laboratory examination and confirm whether cancer is present.

Make Screening Part of Your Routine

Breast cancer awareness means more than checking for lumps. Understanding your personal risk, attending recommended screening and seeking medical advice promptly when something changes are important parts of breast health.

At Bumrungrad International Hospital, the Breast Center provides breast cancer screening and diagnostic assessment, supported by mammography, breast ultrasound and further evaluation when clinically appropriate.

Early detection starts with awareness. Know your risk, recognize new changes and follow the screening schedule recommended for you.
