Bumrungrad Health Briefing #76: Frozen Shoulder, Tennis Elbow: Is Sport Hurting Your Joints?

Exercise strengthens our body and protects long-term health—but when pain begins to affect movement, many wonder: Is physical activity hurting our joints? Conditions like frozen shoulder and tennis elbow are common overuse injuries, often affecting active adults and professionals with repetitive tasks.

What is Frozen Shoulder?

Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) causes pain, stiffness, and limited mobility in the shoulder joint. It typically affects people between ages 40–60 and often develops gradually, progressing through three phases: freezing, frozen, and thawing. Risk factors include diabetes, thyroid disorders, or previous shoulder immobility due to surgery or injury.

What is Tennis Elbow?

Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) results from tiny tears in the tendons that attach forearm muscles to the outside of the elbow. Despite the name, it’s not limited to athletes. Repetitive motions—typing, lifting, or even using tools—can lead to pain, tenderness, and a weak grip.

Are Sports to Blame?

Not directly. Sports and physical activity are vital for joint health—but overtraining, poor technique, and skipping recovery can stress the tendons and joints. Without proper care, repeated strain may lead to chronic pain or injury.

How to Prevent Overuse Injuries:

  • Always warm up and stretch before activity

  • Use correct posture and technique in sports and work

  • Avoid repetitive strain—take breaks and switch tasks

  • Strengthen supporting muscles and improve flexibility

  • Don’t ignore discomfort—pain is a warning sign

When to Seek Help

If pain persists beyond a few days, limits your range of motion, or worsens over time, it’s time to see a doctor. Early treatment can reduce inflammation and prevent long-term damage.

At Bumrungrad International Hospital’s Orthopaedic Centre, specialists in joint and sports injuries offer expert care—from diagnostics to non-surgical and minimally invasive treatments. With the right support, you can stay active—without compromising your joints.
