Digital screens emit blue light, which, in excess, can lead to eyestrain. Symptoms such as dry eyes, blurred vision, and headaches are increasingly common, a phenomenon often referred to as Computer Vision Syndrome. This condition affects both adults and children who spend significant time on digital devices.
The cause of eyestrain from blue light is twofold. Firstly, blue light consists of high-energy, short wavelengths that flicker more than longer wavelengths. This flickering creates glare, reducing visual contrast and clarity. Secondly, focusing on screens often leads to a decreased blinking rate, causing dry eyes and irritation.
Moreover, prolonged exposure to blue light can potentially damage light-sensitive cells in the retina, increasing the risk of macular degeneration. This condition can indirectly contribute to eyestrain due to altered vision. Additionally, blue light exposure, especially at night, can disrupt your circadian rhythm. While poor sleep does not directly cause eyestrain, it can exacerbate its symptoms, leading to tired and strained eyes.
To alleviate these symptoms, our ophthalmologists recommend the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to focus on something 20 feet away. This practice gives your eyes a much-needed rest.
