For this week’s interview, EuroCham Senior Communications Officer Stew Post spoke with FÜLÜ, the acclaimed French electro-brass band, ahead of their live performance at Chew & Bash on 10 January.
Known for blending European jazz traditions with global rhythms, electronic beats, and high-energy carnival influences, the band reflects on cross-cultural collaboration, creative exchange, and what audiences can expect from their first appearance in Cambodia.
The conversation offers a glimpse into how music, much like international business, thrives on openness, adaptation, and shared experience.
Stew: You’ve performed in many countries and cities. What’s your first impression of Phnom Penh’s creative and nightlife scene, and how does it compare to other emerging markets you’ve played in?
FÜLÜ: As we haven’t yet played in Cambodia, we can’t yet really comment on this yet.
But what we have seen in other places where we have toured is that these events revitalise a nation’s identity and boost local economies, particularly tourism and hospitality.
They also promote cultural expression through galleries, festivals, and performance art. When we played in Brazil at the Rio Carnival, it was a good example of this.
Stew: FÜLÜ brings together European musical influences with global sounds. How important is cross-border collaboration in your work, and how does this mirror the way international businesses operate and adapt when entering new markets like Cambodia?
FÜLÜ: Meeting and sharing with other artists in our domain is priceless, it always contributes to our imagination and we take something from it creatively every time. Our songs come from our roots but also constantly evolve with each experience we have.
In the same way, businesses coming to Cambodia will be influenced by tradition and local practices and there will be a two-way sharing process that ultimately ends up with new systems built on understanding, blending tradition with modern themes, encouraging innovation, healing, and connecting with global audiences.
Stew: For business professionals who usually attend EuroCham events in suits rather than sneakers, what should they expect from a FÜLÜ show, and why should they swap a panel discussion for a dance floor on this night?
FÜLÜ: Seeing as we propose a journey into our musical world, people should try to leave their preconceptions at home (and their business shoes!). Our music invites the audience to let go and go with the flow, the Rio carnival taught us to do this and this philosophy has stayed with us.
The energy that you will experience on the dance floor at our shows will stay with you and will help you in the business world!
