BUMRUNGRAD HEALTH BRIEFS #3: Understanding Diabetes: More Than Just High Blood Sugar

Understanding Diabetes: More Than Just High Blood Sugar

Diabetes is a complex condition that extends far beyond the issue of elevated blood sugar levels. If not managed effectively, it can lead to severe damage to major organs over time.

One of the primary concerns with persistently high blood sugar levels is the damage to the tissue lining the blood vessels, which can significantly increase the risk of arteries becoming prematurely clogged. Such blockages can lead to a host of serious health issues, including coronary artery disease, stroke, kidney failure, impaired vision, and poor wound healing. Additionally, high blood sugar can destroy nerve fibers and cells.

There are two main types of diabetes, each affecting the body differently. Type 1 diabetes results in high blood sugar levels due to a deficiency of insulin, whereas Type 2 diabetes occurs when there is a decreased responsiveness to insulin, often referred to as insulin resistance.

For individuals living with diabetes, the primary goal is to maintain blood sugar levels that are normal or as close to normal as possible. This approach is vital in mitigating the damaging effects of the condition. Key strategies include adhering to a balanced diet, engaging in regular exercise, reducing stress, and consistently monitoring blood sugar levels. Additionally, professional medical care is crucial in effectively managing the condition.

For advanced management of diabetes, expertise, and state-of-the-art facilities are essential. At Bumrungrad International Hospital, our multidisciplinary team is dedicated to providing comprehensive and personalized care for each patient.
