Bumrungrad Health Briefs #18: Off to a good start, Enhancing IVF with Advanced Genetic Testing

Off to a good start, Enhancing IVF with Advanced Genetic Testing

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) has transformed reproductive medicine, offering new possibilities for couples struggling to conceive. A significant development in this field is genetic testing, particularly Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT), which provides in-depth insights into the genetic health of embryos. This helps in selecting the most viable embryos for implantation, though it is important to be aware of the complexities and limitations of this technology and the need for expert guidance.

Genetic testing in IVF primarily increases the chance of a successful pregnancy. Embryos with chromosome abnormalities can be identified and excluded, thus selecting those with the highest potential for healthy development. It is especially crucial for couples with a history of hereditary diseases and older women undergoing IVF, as it aids in identifying embryos with the correct chromosome count, reducing the risk of miscarriage or genetic disorders.

However, genetic testing does not guarantee a successful pregnancy. Its effectiveness can be influenced by factors like maternal age, individual health conditions, and embryo quality. The role of specialist healthcare professionals in this process cannot be understated. They conduct and interpret genetic tests and also provide comprehensive counseling, covering potential outcomes, risks, and the emotional aspects of IVF and genetic testing.

While genetic testing in IVF marks a major advancement in reproductive technology, enhancing success rates and the likelihood of healthy pregnancies, it requires a clear understanding of its limitations and the guidance of expert medical professionals.
