Tripartite Meetings on Minimum Wage in 2022

Yesterday, EuroCham Cambodia, represented by Mr. Chheav Narath, a EuroCham Board Member and Chairperson of the Human Resources Committee, took part in the series of tripartite meetings on minimum wage in 2022 for the garment, textile, footwear, and travel product and bag sector.

After four weekly meetings and a voting procedure ended yesterday between the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training (MoLVT), Labour Union, and Employer’s representatives, the new minimum wage for the garment, textile, footwear, and travel product and bag sectors in 2022 is set at USD 194 per month.

We would like to thank Mr. Chheav Narath for his very active engagement in representing the voice of our members including their concerns and recommendations to the minimum wage meetings as part of EuroCham mandate to service our members and entice more European investors to the Kingdom through the dialogue with our Cambodian counterparts, both within the Royal Government and the private sector.

HOW IS THE MINIMUM WAGE SET?
The minimum wage is set/amended in a Prakas by the MoLVT. The Act is issued after the MoLVT has received recommendations from the National Council on Minimum Wage, which is a tripartite body with equal representation from the labor unions, employer’s associations, and the Royal Government. The body conducts a scientific study on minimum wages and promotes dialogue between relevant stakeholders. When considering any possible increases in the minimum wage, the National Council on Minimum Wage will evaluate the following criteria: (1) Basic needs of workers and their families; (2) Cost of living; Inflation; (3) Productivity; (4) Competitiveness; (5) Labor market; and (6) Sector profitability.
